This book tells the history of the sport of rugby union at the University of Bristol. Beginning with the clubs run by the University College and the Medical School, the story covers 150 years of rugby and includes the significant rise of the women’s club in recent years as well as the University’s contribution to the training and development of referees. In addition, fitting tribute is paid to those University rugby players who fought and died in the two World Wars. The University of Bristol won the first ever Inter-Varsity Championship in 1922, and there have been further successes since, notably a memorable Twickenham triumph by an outstanding side in 1972. A number of alumni have gone on to enjoy success in international rugby. Their story is told here along with the stories of numerous others who have developed lifelong friendships through their involvement in rugby at the University of Bristol. Numerous illustrations complement the history throughout the book. Bristolian Mark Hoskins is a rugby follower with a passionate interest in the history and memorabilia of the game. He has written or co-written seven previous rugby books, along with various brochures, and he broadcasts regularly on the radio at Bristol Bears matches.
